Have always been curious if there was similar "turmoil" when Duane died and the band marched on as when The Other Ones, The Dead, etc., tried to soldier on without Garcia.

Anybody have any thoughts?

My guess would be name recognition. They had established a name already.

And it was another time back then. They were likely concerned that people may not connect the two names to each other back then.

The band members were pretty tight. They probably considered themselves brothers if not blood brothers. They were one of the first biracial bands. They had seen a lot of racism growing up in the south. Using the term brother to connect with another guy you are close to was pretty common then and not shallow, like some panhandler coming up to you and saying "hey brother". Our tight group of friends used to call each other "bro" all the time. Also probably to honor Duane.

I have the Atlanta International Pop Festival release and the intro the mc goes into a story of how the human egg is fertilized. Unlike what he learned in school the sperm don't make a mad run to the egg and then one is in. "The sperm surround the egg and twirl it with there tales at a rate of 8 times per minute, in this primordial dance. And this actually happens you know, 8 is the sign of infinity it looks like this, this you know, and thats where we all come from this dance. And life isn't a race. Its not competing with anyone it's playing together like all men play together. And these are the Allman's and they play together, Allman Brothers All MEN".

Likely out of respect to Duanne.

It's interesting listening to that partial of the 10/21/72 Nashville show. The mix is pretty screwed up, but it gives a real clear picture of Phil's "lead-style" bass playing...

Exactly!! From about the 8-minute mark in Truckin' through TOO, Phil's kinda leading the charge.

I probably worded my question wrong---I wasn't trying to be flippant or disrespectful to Duane. Thinking on it some more, ABB was still relatively new, GD was not. Garcia had become the iconic [non-]leader of the Dead; was Duane's role as prominent? Just curious if any of the older heads remember any of the talk from that time.
